The pipa is a four-stringed Chinese musical instrument belonging to the plucked category. Also known as the Chinese lute, this instrument features a pear-shaped wooden body with a varying number of frets, ranging from 12 to 26. Another Chinese plucked lute similar to the pipa is the liuqin, appearing as a smaller version of the former. Historically, the pipa has roots tracing back to as early as the Han dynasty in China. Although once used more broadly to describe various plucked chordophones, the term "pipa" nowadays exclusively refers to the pear-shaped instrument since the Song dynasty.
A renowned musical instrument, the pipa has been esteemed and played in China for close to two millennia. Its influence spread across East and Southeast Asia, giving rise to related instruments such as the Japanese biwa, the Vietnamese đàn tỳ bà, and the Korean bipa. Of these, the Korean bipa is not commonly used today; however, historical examples can be found in museums, with recent efforts aimed at reviving its usage showing partial success.
